Operation Christmas Drop 2012

Three cheers for the guys at Andersen AFB, Guam– who recently completed the 61st annual Operation Christmas Drop campaign.

I dare say one of human nature’s greater failings lies in how we never know how good we have things until we come across folks that have a lot less. A sad commentary comes along even during some of those times, though, as some will say that those having the comparisons’ “less” simply lack the initiative possessed by the comparisons’ “more”- and in some ways deserve their life’s circumstances.

For those who have never visited the Northern Marianas, it’s an area known for it’s beauty and some of the best diving spots on Earth. The Marianas Trench runs along Guam‘s Eastern side- and is the deepest portion of our world’s oceans. The area’s also one with deep military history- known for the fierce, bloody WWII battles waged on Guam, Tinian and Saipan- and known as the launch site for Gen. Paul Tibbett’s trip aboard his Enola Gay to bring WWII to its effective end.

But the islanders who inhabit the Marianas today range from the desperately poor to the fairly self-sufficient. It’s a vast multitude of desperate yet proud people who receive supplies via Operation Christmas Dropevery year- and it’s our military folks who’ll offer that they were the ones most blessed by the evolution.

39,000 pounds of supplies to help the needy fell from the sky this year- courtesy of our U.S. Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft and crews, partners at Yokota Air Base, Japan and others at the University of Guam.

Fear not, shipmates: I’ll soon return to telling folks why our U.S. Navy is the greatest of our armed forces (in my admittedly biased opinion, of course). But today’s a day to pause and render a hearty hand salute to our Air Force guys- and their continued dedication to carrying out the longest-running humanitarian effort our Department of Defense has ever known.

Indeed, even my love for my chosen branch of our military takes a holiday. Great job, U.S. Air Force. May God bless you and keep you safe for the reminder of this holiday season.

Merry Christmas, and Filis Pusgua!

61st Operation Christmas Drop another success!
