How many folks have you had a positive impact on today?  How have you treated folks today?  Most would say I guess I was nice to everyone today, I probably treated everyone well, I could’ve had a positive impact on others…”– and some of you would actually be right.

But what about the rest of you?

Being kind to friends and family members is at once the easiest and hardest thing for us to do- they’re the ones we’d be expected to treat best, right?  And the flip side is that they’re also the ones most likely to tolerate us when we don’t treat them well.  To be sure, chances are pretty dang good that if we treated our clients as poorly as we treat our friends and family members at times, we’d have very few of them left.

I dare say it’s how we treat and/or impact those that aren’t our friends, family members or clients that best reflects our true character.  Did you hold the door open for that lady at the 7-11, or let her grab it herself?  Did you give up a seat and stand, so that another might sit?  Did you let a driver in front of you in a merging lane…or give a “much obliged” wave to someone who let you in?

So who is “Ms. Juanita”- Queen of Popeye’s Fried Chicken, Apopka, FL?  Juanita (or “Ms Juanita”, as she’s known to an untold number or Popeye’s patrons) is a kind of lady you rarely meet these days- and that’s a pretty sad thing.  “Ms. Juanita” has been working at the Popeye’s Fried Chicken in Apopka, FL for 10-12 years- but she bears none of the bitterness, despair or despondent nature many reading this might expect.  She greets everyone with a smile, she’s eager to help co-workers many years her junior and light years behind her in work ethic, and she’s management’s most trusted asset.

“Ms. Juanita” labors without fanfare- neither seeking it nor receiving it.  She simply goes to work every day and dons her smile before she leaves home.  She does the best she can to make things better for all that might be lucky enough to cross her path.  Indeed, it’s “Ms. Juanita”‘s infectious passion for her work and her intent to make a Popeye’s experience an enjoyable one for everyone that does exactly that.

So what about the rest of you?  Are you having a positive impact on as many people as “Ms. Juanita”?  Did you don your smile before leaving home…and is it still there?  Ms. Juanita” is having a positive impact on someone today- what about you?

We have to remember that both our actions and our attitudes have an impact on others– and that we have no control over that.  We do, however, have control over whether that impact is a positive one or a negative one.
