Pedestrian Tales From the Middle of the Road, #44

Well, it’s been a while- but it looks like things are kicking up again.  Admittedly, I’ve been slammed with work and haven’t been able to follow all of the news as closely as I’d like and may have missed some- and I’ll try to catch up.  This story, however, is one garnering a great deal of attention around here- mostly due to the age of the deceased.

This is surely a tragedy.  More than anything else, this speaks to the attitude that’s ingrained in the minds of so many around here:  “I don’t use crosswalks because I don’t want to use crosswalks”, and “I’ll cross the street whenever and wherever I choose to do so- and the cars have to stop for me”.

That’s not true, of course- for we have these things called pedestrian traffic laws.  We’d surely be better off if our local law enforcement decided to put some sort of priority- any priority at all- on saving lives such as this young man’s.  This is another one on you, Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings and Orlando Police Chief Paul Rooney.

May God bless young Steven Mieses’ family and friends, may He bless and comfort Jose Shelvin as he deals with these events- and may He lead the 2 drivers who fled the scene of the tragedy to turn themselves in.

Pedestrian killed in traffic crash in south Orange

Steven Anthony Mieses, 17, was struck by three vehicles before being pronounced dead.

A 17-year-old was killed late Friday after being struck and run over by three vehicles while trying to cross a road in south Orange County, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Steven Anthony Mieses, 17, was pronounced dead about 10:07 p.m. at the scene of the crash at the intersection of Landstar Boulevard and Wetherbee Road.

Mieses attempted to cross Wetherbee Road when he walked into the path of Mitsubishi driven by 29-year-old Jose Shelvin of Orlando, according to FHP spokeswoman Sgt. Kim Montes.

Shelvin stopped his vehicle after striking Mieses while two other vehicles collided with him and left the scene.

Montes said the two vehicles were described as a white Dodge Neon with front damage and a white vehicle with undercarriage damage

The crash remains under investigation.

Anyone with information about the two vehicles that fled the scene can call Crimeline at 1-800-423-8477.
