Pedestrian Tales From the Middle of the Road, #52

Well, it’s been a while since I posted one of these.  I’m sure I’ve missed a few in the time that’s passed since my last posting (and I’m going to do my best to catch up), but what follows is much of what remains far too typical here:  pedestrian disobeys traffic laws and walks into the  street, vehicle comes along and tries to avoid pedestrian, they can’t do it, pedestrian dies.

Hard to misunderstand or misconstrue what happened here- as the caption from the story’s video says it all:  “Man walking in road killed…”,0,7775650.story

A pedestrian was killed late Monday in a traffic crash on east Colonial Drive, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The man was struck by a sport utility vehicle about 10 p.m. at Rivers Edge Drive, between Econlockhatchee Trail and Dean Road, troopers said.

He died at Florida Hospital East Orlando.

Steven Duda, 27, was eastbound in a 2007 Hyundai SUV when the pedestrian walked into the path of the SUV, witnesses told investigators.  The man was walking in the bicycle lane before the crash.

This is yet another death on the watch of Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings and Orlando Police Chief Paul Rooney.  Not exactly sure how many folks must die before these gentlemen realize that enforcing our traffic laws is in the best interests of both pedestrians and motorists- but I hope they do so soon.

Horrifying near-misses like the one I witnessed while sitting at a light recently happen every day.  The following photos from it serve to illustrate that it’s not a matter of if folks will die from their own stupidity, but rather one of when they will do so.  May God bless and comfort Mr. Duda– and may the death of this pedestrian be the one that finally wakes some folks up….
