Another day, another lost hero

Another day, another lost hero

It seems the world’s running out of heroes.  I know that’s not the case, of course- as we see more and more step forward to carry on the fight that a fellow hero has left behind.

The senseless killing of Windermere Police Officer Robert “Robbie” German has left a hole in our Central Florida community, to be sure- and yesterday’s passing of Jeremiah Denton leaves a hole for the country that’s no less gaping.

A native of my home state of Alabama, Admiral Jeremiah Denton served our country in the U.S. Navy from 1945-1979 and followed that up by serving as a U.S. Senator from Alabama from 1981-1987.  In doing so, Admiral Denton became (and remains) the only flag officer to serve as a U.S. senator.

Admiral Denton was undoubtedly one of the toughest and strongest-willed men our nation’s ever known.  His time as a Prisoner Of War in Viet Nam included nearly 4 years of solitary confinement, and his unwavering commitment to America led to more torture sessions than one could ever count.

Maintaining his strong will and an indomitable spirit while the Vietnamese broke down his body, he was able to blink a message in Morse Code that provided the military intelligence folks back home with the first evidence that our forces were being mistreated.

“We don’t have to turn to our history books for heroes, they are all around us.”- Ronald Reagan, State of the Union address, 1/82
